GreenLight Credentials is the world's largest blockchain-secured ledger of verified lifelong learning records and related credentials. Blockchain is simply a database or digital ledger of transactions that is duplicated and distributed across a chain of computer systems. Each block in the chain contains a number of transactions added to a ledger. Proponents of blockchain like the idea of it being a decentralized database managed by multiple participants known as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). They say we'll "own our own data" and cut out the middleman. Not quite.
GreenLight secured a sweet no-bid, sole source deal that was done behind closed doors with Dallas ISD, Dallas College (formerly DCCCD) and Region 10 Education Service Center (ESC). Those who champion this utopian vision of decentralization and open source data need to understand this is a for-profit scheme that uses public money funded by taxpayers. These are lucrative deals that line that pockets of those who get in on the game early.
